Indianapolis, IN – November 11, 2010 – As we celebrate Veterans Day we would like to honor Veterans with better access to jobs. Veterans transitioning from the military have many adjustments to make when returning to civilian life. Obstacles are often daunting when soldiers return to find much of what they knew has since changed. Now they have to tweet, like, connect and share with employers and recruiters across various social networks. What happened to filling out an application and sitting down for an interview?

Applying for a job requires jumping through different hoops these days and Veterans need assistance. Enter the Disabled Veteran Outreach Program (DVOP) Specialists and Local Veteran Employment Representatives (LVER). The Secretary of Labor made funds available in each state to help DVOPs and LVERs meet the employment needs of veterans. Each specialist is a qualified veteran who exclusively serves Veterans and Eligible Persons with employment and training needs.

For many years DVOPs and LVERs had limited access to legitimate jobs for referrals to Veterans. However, over the last three years, a group of Fortune 1000 companies including IBM, The Coca-Cola Company, ConocoPhillips, The Boeing Company, Lockheed Martin and over 500 others have been sending their jobs directly to the local level through DirectEmployers Association’s National Labor Exchange.

Rex Platt, Veterans Program Technician, State of Arkansas observed, “Keep up the great work! What you are doing DOES make a difference. It is a great tool for our DVOP and LVER staff directly serving Veterans and is even recognized as being better than those Big Name job boards.”

DirectEmployers, a non-profit association comprised of more than 70% of America’s Fortune 500 companies, in alliance with the National State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) have created the National Labor Exchange. In addition to delivering jobs to the local level through the DVOPs, LVERs, and state employment service groups, the National Labor Exchange delivers jobs to over 3000 partners including state job banks and numerous military groups like the U.S. Army Reserve and Guard through the Employer Partnership of the Armed Forces (EPO).
