Veteran Career Fairs Remain Beneficial in Job Search

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Despite emerging technology and education, veteran unemployment and outreach remains a challenge for employers. Tools such as military skills translators are helping bridge some of the gaps, but there is definitely no silver bullet in the equation. However, companies and veterans can supplement their efforts with virtual and in-person career fairs. Participating in career fairs provides the opportunity for companies to connect on a more personal level with veterans and assess what opportunities would be a good match for their backgrounds.

Veterans, on the other hand, can take advantage of the interaction to better articulate their strengths, without being confined to their military job title or code. Other benefits include:

  • Participating in onsite interviews
  • Interacting and networking with other veterans
  • Obtaining resume and interviewing advice
  • Introducing and marketing yourself one-on-one

DirectEmployers Association started hosting virtual veteran career fairs this year. “We went from 18 employers to 22 employers for the second event, and the feedback from our Member companies has been wonderful,” stated Simone Murray, Vice President of Member Services. There are more virtual career fairs in the works that will be announced later this year.

Veterans who prefer in-person career fairs should consider attending DirectEmployers Association’s first Veterans Connect Career Fair, Monday, October 21, 2013 at Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego. Details and registration are posted on the Veterans Connect website.

Another source for finding hiring events is Hiring Our Heroes, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. This nationwide initiative has hosted over 400 hiring fairs in all 50 states. According to their website, through December 31, 2012, the effort has helped over 18,400 veterans and military spouses obtain jobs. To view upcoming in-person events, visit the Upcoming Hiring Fairs section of the Hiring Our Heroes website.

To help prepare for your next career fair, Member companies CINTAS and J.B. Hunt helped us create short video tips to help, including how to use your resume to showcase your skills and how to transition your military skills into civilian skills. You can also find tips specific to a virtual career fair in a Help Wanted blog post from March.

We want to hear from you. Are you an employer or veteran? What has been your experience with either virtual or in-person events? What advice would you share?

The following press release was authored by UBM Studios and was originally posted on December 13, 2012.

Game Changing Approach to Traditional Career Fairs Makes it Faster and Easier to Connect Employers with Veterans

CHICAGO, Dec. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Milicruit, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), DirectEmployers Association, and industry leading employers today announced the successful completion of the 10,000 Jobs Challenge for Veterans and Military Spouses. The goal of the 10,000 Jobs Challenge was to demonstrate that hiring veterans and military spouses is a constructive initiative and, through the help of employer partners, document 10,000 veteran and military spouse hires before the end of 2013.

The Challenge kicked off on March 7, 2012 and by May employer partners had reported over 3,000 hires. As of December, over 10,027 hires have been reported to Milicruit, beating the original program deadline by an entire year.

“We’re thrilled to have sponsored and supported such an amazing initiative to help veterans and military families,” said Kate Spellman , President of UBM Studios, the company that runs Milicruit. “Achieving our goal so far ahead of expectations is a testament to the commitment we all feel towards those who have served and supported our country. We couldn’t ask for more fitting news during the holiday season.”

Milicruit will host an additional nationwide virtual career fair on December 19, 2012 that will feature more than 40 employers representing in excess of 24,000 jobs available. Service members and military spouses are encouraged to register today to reserve their space in these ground-breaking events at www.veteranscareerfair.com.

Unlike a traditional career fair, the virtual career fairs allows employers to meet and interact with talent from all over the country/world in one day, and without the cost, burden or environmental impact typically associated with traveling to and from physical venues.

Journey from Navy to Talent Acquisition Reinforces Dedication & Importance of the Right People

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

Having served in the Navy for over two decades, Lance Sapera understands dedication and the value military servicemen and women bring to the civilian workforce. Now, as Director of Talent Acquisition for 24 Hour Fitness, he’s helping the organization remain successful through continued emphasis on having the right person in the right place at the right time. As Lance explained, “With almost 4 million members you can imagine the individual connections that take place every day, and keeping our members happy is what’s important to us so they can achieve their fitness goals.”

Did you know?

24 Hour Fitness has made both the G.I. Jobs Top 100 Military Friendly Employers® List and Top 25 Military Friendly Spouse Employer for two consecutive years.

His dedication also translates to family. Lance recently celebrated his 25th anniversary, and when asked about his kids, he proudly responded with “Certainly my wife and my kids are my biggest accomplishments.”

In an interview from our conference, Lance and I chatted about the culture at 24 Hour Fitness, the value of hiring from the military, what resonates with him about talent acquisition and benefits of belonging to DirectEmployers Association.

Nancy: How did you find yourself in HR? Tell me a little about your history.

Lance: That’s a good question. I did not begin my career as an HR professional. I was in the Navy for 21 years before joining 24 Hour Fitness over five years ago. My first couple of jobs at 24 Hour Fitness were in different parts of the organization, then two years ago, our Chief People Officer came to me and asked how I felt about recruiting and talent acquisition. I replied, “I think it’s critically important. People are the #1 differentiator for our company.” At that point I was given a new opportunity and jumped at the chance.

Nancy: Aside from being open 24 hours, what is it about your corporate culture sets you apart?

Lance: There’s really something special going on at our company, the 22,000 members we have and our leadership team – we’re excited about what we’re doing. We’re involved in improving people’s lives through fitness. For some people it’s getting off blood pressure medication, for other people it’s training to get their personal best in a marathon. We’re all about supporting those individual fitness journeys.

What sets us apart is really improving people’s lives through the fitness piece. It starts with the individual connection. We understand that people are there for a reason, so we connect with them when they come in the door. It’s the greeting, “Welcome to 24 Hour Fitness,” equipment that works and people that are friendly so that it’s not an intimidating environment that maybe keeps you from not going.

Nancy: Tell me a little bit about the type of people that you hire. What makes your hiring goals different than other places? What do you do really well in the area of hiring?

Lance: What makes us different is we’re really looking for people who are passionate about what they’re doing. You don’t have to be a marathoner or athlete to work at 24 Hour Fitness, but you do need to be passionate about people and enthusiastic about fitness so that you can really help members achieve their fitness goals. Whatever they’re trying to accomplish, you’re there to support them and help them on their fitness journey.

Nancy: What was it about DirectEmployers that you said, “Hmm, this is something that I really need to pay attention to?”

Lance: I liked the idea of all the things I could accomplish with a limited budget with DirectEmployers. As a member company, I get state-of-the-art technology that works for me all the time, without the need to do very much. So that piece, and the fact that they have a mission that can actually help us make more intelligent decisions about what we’re doing around recruiting and staffing, what’s working and what’s not, as opposed to a “gut” feel. I really like the ability they have to help us with search engine optimization. It’s a competitive market out there, and trying to get my company and our positions to stand out is tough, and we’re making progress in this area since becoming a member. I think the fourth thing that really stood out for me with DirectEmployers is just the staff and the support. They think about things that can help 24 Hour Fitness that frankly, I’m so busy and have so many things going on, that I haven’t even had the time to think about.

Nancy: Based on your experience as a military person transitioning to the civilian workforce, what do military folks bring to civilian jobs?

Lance: The military personnel transitioning into the civilian sector are a fantastic pool of talent for countless reasons. They are versatile because every couple of years, most military people get a new assignment. So they know how to go in, learn a new job, become an expert, and train somebody else to do it. They’ve got that flexibility, they have leadership, they have discipline and they understand how to work with a team.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. A huge thank you to Lance for his time. Despite Present Barriers, Military Experience Positively Impacts Current and Future Career Path

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Although employers are trying to improve translating military skills to their civilian jobs, veterans frequently face hurdles around required degrees, certifications and licensures despite their experience in the field and military training.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart aired a very eye-opening segment about the difficulty of turning military experience into civilian employment. The two former Iraq War combat medics in the segment shared their challenges and explained the need for a better transition program, education around resume writing and the need for veterans to come home with better certifications.

DirectEmployers has several staff and Member company representatives that are veterans, including Alicia Wallace of WellPoint, Mike Seidle of DirectEmployers Foundation and Lance Sapera of 24 Hour Fitness. With Veterans Day being earlier this month and the public discussion around returning soldiers, I reached out to them for insight about how their experiences helped them in their civilian careers, and sought their advice for veterans currently searching for gainful employment in the civilian workforce. Here’s what they had to say:

Alicia Wallace, MBA, EEO Program Manager, Disability Outreach, HR, Diversity & Inclusion, WellPoint
“My transition from the military to corporate America was a long one. My first job out of the military was with the Department of Defense then with the Department of Labor. I served In the United States Army on active duty as a non-commissioned officer after attending several years of college. I moved quickly through the ranks from Private First Class to Staff Sergeant within six years as a Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Sergeant. I was selected as a unique member of the U. S. All-Army Track & Field team. I won a very grueling competition at Fort Stewart, Georgia, toughest female in the 24th Infantry Division and was recognized by General Norman Schwarzkopf. I was also the first female ever assigned to the 91st Chemical Company and first female selected to coach the Army’s track team.

Alicia’s Advice:
“Continue to learn as much as possible while in the military, go to school and obtain a degree, if possible, around your military assignments. When transitioning into a civilian career, identify one that best fits your experience level, education and offers the best use of your skills. Also try and access which type of environment and industry works best, one which is highly structured? One where innovation is valued? What about working as part of a team? Or working independently? Take the time to do a personal assessment before diving in. Unlike military assignments, civilian environments don’t change managers and teams, every 2-3 years. You may work under the same boss or with the same team for many years.”

Mike Seidle, Director of Development, DirectEmployers Foundation
“When I got out of the service, my military experience allowed me to get a part time job that paid enough for me to support my family and attend college. Between Veterans benefits and my job, I was able to escape the college experience without student loan debt. Employers were absolutely willing to give a vet with an honorable discharge a shot… even against far more qualified candidates. When I left college and joined the workforce, employers seemed much more interested in my military experience than in my education.

As a business owner prior to joining DirectEmployers and in finding my job at DirectEmployers, being a veteran was always a plus. “

Mike’s Advice:
“Make sure you are being hired by the right employer — a company where you can see yourself working for years. If you see a potential employer treating people in a way you would not like to be treated or doing things you would not want to be asked to do, then find another opportunity.”

Lance Sapera, Director, Talent Acquisition, 24 Hour Fitness
“When I retired from the Navy, I was both excited about the opportunity and apprehensive about joining the private sector. Fortunately, I had a strong network of family, friends and professional acquaintances supporting my transition. And that is my top piece of advice… let others help you! “

Lance’s Advice:
“Finding a job can seem overwhelming, particularly in this economy, which is exactly why military veterans, retirees, and military spouses need to take advantage of the many programs and initiatives designed to assist their transition. For starters, I recommend the following:

  1. Leverage your network. Who do you know that knows someone in the company(ies) you want to work for? Reach out to veterans that completed a successful transition; they want to help you.
  2. Attend the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) and take the activities seriously (resume writing, interviewing, financial planning, etc.). Learn about the resources available and use them. Military spouses should leverage the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP).
  3. Take time to think about what you really want to do. What are you passionate about? Most military personnel took the next job their detailer assigned them. That is not the case as you transition from the service. For example, do you want to lead teams, or do you want to be an individual contributor? Do you want to use your technical expertise, or do you want to teach, coach or train?
  4. Identify your strengths. Employers value the leadership, discipline, flexibility, teamwork, and countless other skills veterans embody; use these to your advantage.
  5. Identify companies that share your values and have a purpose you embrace. Military Friendly companies are a great place to start.

Good luck!”

Thank you Alicia, Mike and Lance for your time, advice and service to our country!

Veterans.jobs Now Offers Enhanced Search Functionality for Veterans Looking for Employment

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

DirectEmployers Association announces the revamp of Veterans.jobs, a website that helps transitioning military men and women find employment in the civilian workforce, including a more robust search and better user experience.

INDIANAPOLIS, May 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — To further honor Memorial Day, a time where Americans around the nation remember those who have served in the military, DirectEmployers Association shows support for their sacrifice by announcing the revamp of Veterans.jobs, a website intended to assist transitioning servicemen and women find employment in the civilian workforce.

“Further cultivating and developing veterans outreach programs for member companies has always been a goal of DirectEmployers. By implementing a better search functionality on Veterans.jobs, we’ve created a better user experience for job seekers and sponsorship opportunities for employers committed to showing their dedication to hiring veterans,” commented Bill Warren, Executive Director, DirectEmployers Association.

Searching for a specific Military Occupation Code (MOC) or Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) on Veterans.jobs has also been improved to help create more relevant job results. On the previous Veterans.jobs interface, any searches done would take the job seeker to an entirely different website. For example, if a search were conducted for MOC 11B1A, the job seeker would be redirected to the separate domain http://11b1a.jobs, instead of displaying the job results related to that specific MOC. Now, regardless of what MOC/MOS is searched, jobs relevant to that MOC will be displayed on the http://www.veterans.jobs website.

While Veterans.jobs has been a launching point for translating MOC/MOS codes to match civilian jobs, employers are also embracing this method of skill-matching. By adopting a military skills translator onto their .JOBS microsites, employers have been able to supplement their veterans recruiting strategies. For example, AT&T was recently highlighted for its veterans outreach website, http://att-veterans.jobs, which has been incorporated in its corporate career site to help recruit transitioning servicemen and women.

Outside of the realm of Veterans.jobs, many of DirectEmployers member companies see the value of hiring veterans into their civilian workplace. Eric Airola, Senior Director of Human Resources, J.B. Hunt Transport remarked, “We love veterans at J.B. Hunt because they come into the workplace with a sense of awareness about what their capabilities and responsibilities are and they take their jobs very seriously.”

INDIANAPOLIS, February 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Now, more than ever, it’s important to recognize those who have assisted the growing number of military spouses and veterans alike transition back into the civilian workforce.
